In detail

Merging PDF files: how it works and what to know

One document, in the order you pick

Choose two or more PDFs and GenPDF joins them into a single document, the first file's pages first. The pages are copied as they are, with their text, fonts and pictures, and each keeps its own size and orientation, so an A4 report and a landscape slide deck can sit in one file.

Nothing is uploaded. The files are read and joined in your browser, which is why even a big batch does not wait on a transfer.

Fix the order afterwards

The merged PDF opens in the editor with a thumbnail of every page. Drag a page to move it, turn one that came in sideways, delete the cover sheet you do not need, then download the result. Every move can be undone.

Files that are not PDFs yet

A Word, Excel or PowerPoint file has to become a PDF first: use Word to PDF, then merge. Photos and scans can be turned into a PDF with JPG to PDF. To use only some pages of a file, extract those pages first, then merge them.

Limits, plainly

There is no fixed number of files, but know the following:

  • The files are joined in your device's memory, so a very large set depends on how much memory it has.
  • A password-protected PDF has to be unlocked first, using its password.
  • The merged file is about as big as the files together. Compress it afterwards if it must be smaller.
  • A PDF opened in the editor on its own is limited to 25 MB.
  • On the free plan, 10 downloads a day from merge, split, compress and the other page tools; Pro or a 7-day pass has no limit.

Why GenPDF

Merge PDF with GenPDF: what is different

Joined on your device

The files are read and joined in your browser, not uploaded, which is also why it is quick.

Put the pages in order

Drag the page thumbnails to reorder them, turn a page the right way up, or delete the ones you don't need, before you download.

Then do more

The merged PDF opens in the editor: change its words, sign it, number its pages or compress it without opening another site.

Questions

Merge PDF: questions and answers

How do I combine PDFs into one file?

Choose the PDFs here in the order you want: GenPDF joins them into one document in your browser and opens it. Drag pages to fix the order if needed, then download. Free, no account. To join photos, turn them into a PDF first; to make the result smaller, compress it.

Are my files uploaded to merge them?

No. GenPDF combines the PDFs in your browser. A scanned page is sent as an image only if you later agree to have its words read in the editor, and deleted as soon as they are read.

In what order are the files joined?

In the order you pick them. You can then drag pages into any order in the Pages panel.

Can I merge a PDF that has a password?

Unlock it first with the Unlock tool, using its password, then merge it.

Is there a limit?

No set limit on files: it depends on your device's memory. Dozens of ordinary documents merge in seconds. On the free plan, 10 downloads a day from merge, split, compress and the other page tools; Pro or a 7-day pass has no limit.

Can I merge PDFs of different page sizes?

Yes. Pages are copied as they are, so each keeps its own size and orientation. Use Crop or the page tools afterwards if you want them alike.

Can I merge only some pages of each file?

Yes. Open each file, use Extract pages to save just the pages you need, then merge those files.

Can I merge Word documents or photos with PDFs?

Convert them to PDF first: Word to PDF for Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, JPG to PDF for photos and scans. Then merge everything.

Will the merged PDF be much bigger?

About as big as the files together. If it is too big to send, open it and use Compress, or Split by size for an email limit.

Can I merge PDFs on my phone?

Yes. GenPDF works in a phone's browser: choose the files, let them join, then drag the page thumbnails to reorder them. A very large set may be limited by your phone's memory, so merge it in smaller groups if it stalls.
