In detail

Converting a PDF to Word: three modes and their limits

Three ways to get a Word file

Open the Download menu, choose Save as Word, then pick the type of document:

  • Keep layout (editable) keeps each paragraph in its place as editable Word text. Bordered tables become Word tables, pictures are placed one by one, and links and Arabic direction are kept.
  • Flowing text gives headings, paragraphs and lists that reflow as you edit, with bordered tables as Word tables, links, alignment and text styling, set out like the PDF: running headers and footers, columns, spacing, indents and pictures. Artwork Word cannot rebuild becomes a picture of its own area.
  • Page images places each page as an image inside Word, so it looks exactly like the PDF. The text in those images cannot be edited.

Arabic PDF to Word without reversed letters

A right-to-left line stored as left-to-right text reads backwards in Word. GenPDF marks Arabic paragraphs as right to left, so they open in reading order, with numbers and Latin words in place.

Honest limits

A PDF has no real paragraphs or tables, only text and lines placed on a page, so a conversion is always an interpretation. Check the result before you rely on it.

  • Fonts must be available in Word: common open fonts are swapped for their Word equivalents, and spacing can differ.
  • Turned text and complex graphics stay images in Keep layout.
  • Tables without borders are not detected as tables.

Scanned PDFs and your privacy

A scanned page has no text to convert. Page images works without reading it. For editable text, choose Edit text first: if you agree, the page's image is read on our server and deleted as soon as the text is back, then you save the recognised text and convert. The Word file itself is made in your browser, and the PDF is not uploaded for it.

Why GenPDF

PDF to Word with GenPDF: what is different

Structure, not just text

Headings become Word headings and lists stay lists, so the document can be restyled in Word rather than retyped.

Arabic in the right order

Right-to-left paragraphs are set right to left in Word, so Arabic reads in order instead of coming out backwards.

Made on your device

The Word file is written in your browser: the PDF is not sent to a server to convert it.

Questions

PDF to Word: questions and answers

How do I convert a PDF to Word without losing the formatting?

Choose Keep layout (editable): each paragraph stays where it was as Word text, bordered tables become Word tables and pictures are placed one by one. Fonts Word does not have are replaced and spacing can differ, so check the result. For the exact look, Page images places each page as a picture, but its text cannot be edited.

Are tables and pictures kept?

Keep layout (editable) keeps each paragraph in place as Word text, rebuilds bordered tables as Word tables and places pictures individually; turned text and complex graphics stay images. Flowing text gives headings, paragraphs, lists, bordered tables and pictures that reflow, set out like the PDF, with headers, footers and columns. Page images saves the whole page as an image inside Word, including tables and pictures; the text in that image is not editable. Keep layout includes some of the PDF's own TrueType fonts (not those for Arabic) where their licence allows, though text you type later may show in another font; other fonts must be available in Word, and spacing can differ.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?

Yes. Page images works without recognizing scanned text. For editable text, read the pages first with OCR or choose Edit text, save the recognized text, then convert. Opening the PDF does not start recognition.

Can I convert an Arabic PDF to Word without reversed letters?

Yes. A right-to-left line written as left-to-right text reads backwards; GenPDF marks Arabic paragraphs as right to left, so Word shows them in reading order, with numbers and Latin words in place.

Is my PDF uploaded to convert it?

Word export itself runs in your browser. If you separately choose Edit text for a scanned page, text recognition may send page images to the recognition service.

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

Page images does, but its text cannot be edited. The editable modes follow the PDF's layout as closely as Word allows; fonts that Word does not have are replaced and spacing can differ, so check the result.

Can I convert only some pages?

Yes. Use Extract pages to save the pages you want as a new PDF, open that, and convert it.

Which mode should I choose?

Keep layout to edit text where it is, Flowing text to restyle or reuse the content, and Page images to keep the exact look.

Is there a limit?

The editor opens PDFs up to 25 MB. On the free plan, 2 PDFs a day can be made into Word, of up to 20 pages each; Pro or a 7-day pass has no limit (see pricing).
